Psychology of Round and Square — Paul Yih

An invitation to regenerate

CCI 2026 invites educators, counselors, researchers, technologists, and communities to explore, adapt, and improve the visual methods I have developed through my cross-cultural journey. Our purpose is to widen access to learning and guidance, deepen understanding across cultures, and bring conscience and responsibility into our use of artificial intelligence.

Regenerate! If colleagues discover a clearer image, a better question, or a more useful method, I welcome their reinvention. Our shared work can grow through application, criticism, correction, and creative renewal. Contributions should remain visible, with credit for the people and communities who make them possible.

Our vision

We envision people participating more fully in learning and counseling through words, images, and dialogue. PRS© and the 3C© system provide a starting visual vocabulary. Cultural Spheres© help us examine the environments in which people interpret experience. AIWI© joins Artificial Intelligence with Wisdom Intelligence as a proposed ethical and educational framework.

Our aspiration is to serve communities across 140 languages. This is a development goal: each language and cultural adaptation will need participants, careful translation, accessibility review, and practical evaluation.

The educational mission and personal journey

My early aspirations, around 1966 in Brazil, grew from my appreciation of Salesian education, learning through play, curiosity about languages and Indigenous communities, and concern for young people living with limited educational opportunities. These experiences helped shape my later engagement with educational psychology, counseling, and communication.

During my university years in the 1970s, I explored visual ways of making communication and cultural circumstances easier to discuss. I date the nascent development of my methods to 1974–1975 and the earliest independent initiative to 1977, when I left my university post. CCI’s institutional chapter began in the mid-1980s. These milestones describe my recollection of the work’s development; an expanded archive can add supporting records.

The Monkey journeys West

The Monkey’s journey West is my metaphor for encountering other intellectual and cultural worlds. Through reflection, I rediscovered meaning in the Chinese images and values that had accompanied me from childhood. Sky and earth, round and square, yin and yang, and the person situated among them became resources for revisiting psychology and communication.

The metaphor and symbolic readings are part of my personal inquiry. Historical explanations of characters, cultural traditions, and psychological theories should be documented separately so readers can distinguish inherited sources from my adaptations.

A continuing visual inquiry

The 3C© system brings together Communication Dynamics, Communication Analytica, and Cultural Spheres. PRS©, the Psychology of Round and Square, uses shapes and their configurations to help people explore communication. My visual history includes pointed forms; in the present account I emphasize the round and square as foundational, with the pointed configuration expressing a transformation in communication. A rotated square remains geometrically a square.

Since the Covid period, renewed study of my past and exchanges with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini NotebookLM, and DeepSeek have contributed to my formulation of AIWI©. Their questions, responses, and corrections are part of the development record. AI feedback should remain identifiable and open to independent human review.

Visual communication and the Cultural Sphere of AI

When words are difficult, a person may begin with a shape, a color, an arrangement, or a change in opacity. The counselor can ask what it represents and help the person explore the experience. The aim is to make expression easier while preserving the person’s authority over its meaning.

Interactive show and tell

A proposed digital workspace would let participants move, rotate, resize, and layer shapes; adjust opacity; and revisit earlier configurations. Time and movement could make a sequence visible. AI could assist with translation, questions, accessible descriptions, and summaries. Participants and professionals would guide interpretation.

For example, a participant might place a small translucent circle beneath a large square and explain that this represents feeling overwhelmed. The next question is what support or space would look like. The image is an invitation to dialogue, not a diagnosis.

AIWI and the ecological recycling of knowledge

My ecological recycling of knowledge diagram connects knowledge, intelligence, conscience, and wisdom through continuing reflection. AIWI© asks us to examine evidence, consequences, missing perspectives, and opportunities for correction. It is a proposed framework to develop and evaluate, rather than a claim that AI possesses conscience or that a visual method guarantees therapeutic benefit.

The AIWI© images also explore a linguistic connection: the Chinese term rengong zhihui is used for artificial intelligence, while its wording invites my reflection on wisdom. That reflection motivates the framework; it does not establish moral wisdom in a machine.

Future directions and shared development

OpenBooks and Ask Zé

Develop a question-led learning experience in which Zé Maca asks for the learner’s language and self-selected learning level. Offer clear answers, sources, alternative perspectives, document summaries linked to original passages, and follow-up questions. Let learners examine and challenge information. MyPage can preserve dated exchanges and appended corrections, with sharing chosen by the learner.

Adaptation across communities

Begin with a small set of language communities, including English and Portuguese, and invite local educators and counselors to co-design examples. Add text descriptions, symbols, and adjustable displays so meaning does not depend on color alone. Publish which adaptations have been reviewed and where further work is needed.

Professional evaluation

Document experience from the original practice, then compare proposed digital methods with existing approaches. Examine ease of expression, comprehension, time, accessibility, participant comfort, and misunderstandings. Any claims about anxiety relief or other therapeutic outcomes require appropriate study. Counseling applications should involve qualified professionals.

Dialogue across disciplines

We would like to interact and collaborate with all parties and to invite all to join this GUARDIANSHIP of the future paths of AI or SI, and that is the real purpose for the creation of the AIWI© in the use of the PRS©

Regeneration with visible responsibility

Invite new configurations, translations, teaching examples, and improved methods. Preserve attribution, version history, and explanations of changes. Protect private counseling material and seek permission before sharing personal examples. Establish clear reuse terms before distributing editable assets widely.

The first development cycle

The following sequence turns the vision into work that collaborators can examine. Timing and participation will be set as the project develops.

Assemble the founding archive

Preserve the earlier CCI reference; organize the images and chronology; write captions separating personal interpretation, historical sources, and future proposals. Record Paul Yih’s authorship and the assistance of each AI system.

Build one interactive demonstration

Create a simple visual conversation using round, square, pointed configurations, opacity, and movement. Provide multilingual text and an accessible alternative. Begin with fictional examples and voluntary feedback.

Review with people who will use it

Invite educators, counselors, learners, and community representatives to examine clarity and cultural fit. Record disagreements and limitations as carefully as positive responses. Revise before broadening use.

Publish and invite regeneration

Present CCI 2026 with its historical links, demonstration, evidence status, and invitation to contribute. Expand language coverage when local review and support are available. Keep changes and contributor credits visible.

Founding invitation

I welcome colleagues who wish to question, adapt, regenerate, or reinvent these methods. Bring your language, your cultural experience, and your criticism. Help us discover which images open understanding, which meanings need revision, and which new methods serve people better. Our future with AI should make room for curiosity, dignity, and responsible creative work.

The visual references preserve the supplied artwork. Captions explain its role in this outline and identify selected historical or interpretive distinctions. Further revisions can regenerate these graphics with corrected text, clearer lettering, and accessible alternatives.
